What is the Groundwater Guardian program?
Groundwater Guardian is a program which supports, recognizes, and connects communities protecting ground water. It is designed to employ local citizens to take voluntary steps toward protecting their ground water resources. Groundwater Guardian can be a catalyst for ground water protection programs such as a local wellhead protection or source water protection programs. Groundwater Guardian is not a regulatory program, rather it relies on voluntary sreps developed at the community level.
How can the Groundwater Guardian program help communities protect groundwater?
- By raising awareness through educational materials and activities about the importance of ground water and how to prevent and/or reduce sources of its contamination
- By providing information and resources the Groundwater Guardian program serves as a clearinghouse for information and technical assistance for comminities interested in protecting ground water
- By inspiring communities to develop, sustain and expand local ground water protection activities
- By helping communities develop solutions that move towards more comprehensive and coordinated activities to protect ground water
- By supporting regional and national networks of communities that facilitate communication and collaboration between local, state and national organizations to protect ground water
- By providing recognition for the ground water protection achievements of communities through a combination of local and national ceremonies sponsored by The National Groundwater Foundation
