As the nation's largest earth, science, research and information agency the United States Geological Survey maintains a long tradition of providing "Earth Science in the Public Service." USGS ground water quality activities fall within this agency's responsibility to provide geologic, topographic and hydrologic information that contributes to the wise management of the nation's water resources and that promotes the health, safety and well-being of the people.

They provide maps, databases, descriptions and analyses of:

• Land surface
• Underlying geologic structure
• Natural hazards
• Dynamic processes of the earth

Ground water research carried out by the USGS is concerned primarily with:

• Ground water quantity
• The characterization of ground water quality
• Investigations of ground water contamination problems.

USGS also disseminates information on:

• Ground water aquifers
• Water availability and use
• Potential sources of ground water contamination
• Other related topics.
