Coldwater is located in southern Michigan and has a population of
10,500. Currently, the community does not have problems with
their ground water but they are nonetheless taking preventative
steps to protect their resource. The city has started hazardous
waste collections as part of their ground water protection
strategy. Oil, oil filters, antifreeze, and dry cell batteries
are collected by the city for recycling. In addition, Coldwater
has started an photographic film fixer recycling program to
prevent silver from eventually ending up in the ground water.
The city identified possible users of film fixer, including
hospital x-ray departments.
