Chippewa Falls depends on ground water for all of its drinking water. Nitrate levels in some of the city's wells has increased in recent years requiring a new well to be installed. Both agriculture and industry are potentially responsible for the high nitrate levels. To educate the public about ground water quality concerns and to gain support for possible future regulations for land use in the wellhead recharge area, a Wellhead Protection Newsletter was published and distributed to all residents within the five year zone of contribution to the city's wells. The newsletter explains ground water movement, present problems and future concerns, and explains how individual activities on their property can impact ground water quality.
